Beyond practicing law, BA LLB graduates can also enter civil services, where a legal background is highly valued, or work in legal academia as lecturers or researchers. The program's interdisciplinary nature also allows graduates to explore careers in areas like policy-making, journalism, and international relations. With further specialization, they can pursue careers in niche legal areas such as intellectual property law, environmental law, human rights law, and more. The first semester of the BALLB (Hons) program establishes a solid foundation in legal studies. Students engage with English-I to enhance their communication skills. Major-I allows for exploration in either History or Economics, while Minor (a) offers options like Sociology-1, Political Science-1, and Economics-I. The curriculum also includes key legal subjects such as the Law of Torts, Consumer Protection Laws, and the Law of Contract, providing essential insights into legal frameworks.
In the second semester, students deepen their legal understanding with English-II, enhancing their communication proficiency. Major-II allows exploration of English, Economics, or History, while Minor (a) offers subjects like Sociology-II, Political Science-II, and Economics-II. Key legal courses include Crime, Deviance and Society, Jurisprudence, and Special Contracts, which provide critical insights into legal principles and societal issues.
In the third semester, students study History-III, examining historical contexts that influence legal systems. Sociology-III delves into societal structures and their impact on law. Economics-I provides insights into the economic principles affecting legal frameworks. English-III enhances legal writing and analytical skills. Constitutional Law-I introduces fundamental constitutional principles, while Family Law-I focuses on personal laws concerning marriage and familial relations.
The fourth semester encompasses Legal History, which explores the evolution of legal systems over time. Political Science-III examines the relationship between law and governance. Economics-II provides a deeper understanding of economic principles impacting legislation. Students may choose one language course: Hindi-I, Punjabi-I, or French-I. Constitutional Law-II focuses on advanced constitutional issues, while Family Law-II addresses complexities in personal law.
The fifth semester explores Hindi-II, Punjabi-II, or French-II to enhance language proficiency. Law and Social Transformation examines the impact of legal frameworks on societal change. Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) I and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) I provide insights into contemporary Indian laws. Alternate Dispute Resolution covers methods for resolving conflicts outside traditional litigation, while Law of Property encompasses principles of property rights, including the Transfer of Property Act, 1882.
In the sixth semester, Research Methodology equips students with essential skills for legal research and analysis. Economics-III examines economic principles relevant to law and policy. Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) II and Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) II focus on contemporary legal frameworks. Administrative Law addresses the powers and functions of government agencies. Students may also choose from options like Local Self Government, Interpretation of Statutes and Principles of Legislation, or International Criminal Law and the International Criminal Court to deepen their understanding of specialised legal areas.
The seventh semester features specialised electives such as Public International Law, which explores global legal frameworks. Drafting, Pleading, and Conveyancing enhance essential legal writing skills, while Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 (BSA) focuses on contemporary evidence law. Civil Procedure Code-I examines the processes of civil litigation. Students may choose from options like Health Laws, Right to Information and Media Law, or Organized Crimes and Internal Security Laws to tailor their studies to specific interests. Business Law-I rounds out the curriculum, providing foundational knowledge in corporate regulations.
The eighth semester offers advanced electives that align with students’ specific interests. Students deepen their understanding with courses such as Company Law, which focuses on corporate regulations and governance. Professional Ethics and Professional Accounting System emphasise ethical practices in legal and financial fields. Civil Procedure, including Limitation Law-II, explores litigation processes. Students can choose from options like International Trade Law, Law of Registration and Court Fee Act 1870, or Land Laws and Rent Laws. Business Law-II complements their studies, providing insights into commercial legislation. Project Work or Internships allow students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts.
In the ninth semester, students focus on specialised subjects such as Labour and Industrial Laws, exploring the legal aspects of employment and workplace relations. Moots and Practical Training enhance advocacy skills through simulated court experiences. Forensic Science introduces legal applications of scientific methods. Students also study International Human Rights to understand global human rights frameworks. Additionally, they can choose from topics like Indirect Taxes, Private International Law, or Election Laws, allowing for tailored learning in their areas of interest. Research Seminars and Advanced Legal Writing further refine their research and presentation skills in preparation for their dissertation project.
The final semester culminates with the completion and presentation of the Dissertation Work, allowing students to showcase their independent research. Participants engage in Final Internships or Capstone Projects to enhance their practical skills. Students explore essential subjects such as Labour Laws and the International Labour Organization, Information Technology Law, Intellectual Property Laws, and Principles of Taxation Laws. Additionally, they can choose from topics like Criminology, Penology and Victimology, Service Law, or Socio-Economic Offences, ensuring a well-rounded conclusion to their legal education while preparing for successful careers in the legal profession.
Legal Aid Clinic
Rayat Bahra College of Law has established its own Legal Aid Clinic with the objective of providing legal aid for social justice. The Legal Aid Club at RBCL aims to spread legal awareness, promote justice, and uphold equality. In collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority, the clinic educates and assists individuals who cannot access justice due to economic or other disabilities.
Computer Lab
RBCL features a fully equipped computer lab that provides students with access to advanced technology, e-journals, and other essential study materials. Available at any time, this facility enables students to enhance their computer skills, which are increasingly integral to professional success.
Moot Court
The college boasts a well-furnished moot court, designed to offer aspiring lawyers a realistic environment to practice law cases and gain hands-on experience in courtroom proceedings. RBCL regularly organizes moot court competitions at various levels, guided by experienced faculty. Students have participated in and won several competitions at both college and national levels.
Forensic Lab
Recognizing the importance of forensic science in legal careers, RBCL has established a forensic lab to provide practical training in this critical area. Students are trained to analyze evidence from crime scenes, suspects, and victims, and are introduced to fingerprint analysis and other forensic techniques.
Library
RBCL's library houses an extensive collection of books, journals, and e-journals that support students’ academic and professional growth. With a conducive environment for study, the library fosters a love of reading and research. The digital section provides access to online resources, including e-journals, at any time. Additionally, students have access to newspapers and magazines, which are valuable for competitive exam preparation.
